About the Artist
Farheen Ali is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist whose works span a variety of art forms, such as medical illustration, Japanese Sumi-e brush painting and jewelry art. Farheen has always been intrigued by hidden connections in the everyday world. Whether it is the way the branches of a tree mimic the branching arteries and vessels in the human body, or how natural stone and can be ground to make paint for a painting, it’s these shared interrelationships which drive all her work. Her jewelry too, builds on these connections where she creates pieces for museums which are inspired by artwork in their collections. Many of these pieces are currently being exhibited at the Aga Khan and Gardiner Museum shops as well as Immersive Van Gogh exhibit.
Farheen creates her works under the name “The Spring Moon” which was given to her by her Japanese Sumi-e instructor. By using this name for her pieces, it is her hope that all who wear her art forms will become a part of her ongoing creative journey, weaving their unique stories into each piece they wear.
Almond Blossom Collection
Inspired by Van Gogh’s ‘Almond Blossom’ painting, these pieces use natural stones and crystals mixed with delicate floral elements. Dyed howlite and reconstituted stone form the bulk of this collection, which is offset with creamy pearls and enamel flowers. All these elements come together to capture the colour palette of this painting as well as the softer and delicate feel of these compositions.
Starry Night Collection
These pieces, inspired by Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night,” were exclusively created for the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit by the Toronto-based artist, Farheen Ali. This one-of-a-kind collection showcases an intriguing mix of elements such as luminous, handmade glass, electroplated haematite and natural stone. All these materials and textures are woven together to capture the swirling brushstrokes and the sparkling dreamlike effect which is so prevalent in this painting.
The Sunflower jewelry collection was exclusively created for the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit by the Toronto-based artist, Farheen Ali. These pieces utilize a mixture of porcelain beads and handmade glass to capture the earthy quality which is a distinctive feature of Van Gogh’s Sunflower series. Elements such as polymer clay and wood are also incorporated in these works to capture the essence of this painting, giving each piece a raw and textural quality.
